London Marathon
Every year since 1981, London is crossed by a wave of runners who start at Blackheat Common and end at The Mall, a race that goes on for 42.2 km. The race starts with professional Marathon runners, including well-known and Olympic champions, the rest of the participants starting after them.
The origin of this Marathon goes back to the proposal by Olympic champion Chris Brasher. After participating in the New York Marathon in 1979, he wanted to organize a similar event in London, an activity where social and cultural differences are less important and all men seem to belong to one big family that is happy to share a similar experience.
Along the full course, spectators cheer and encourage the athletes, contributing to an exciting atmosphere of healthy competition: the streets also host different shows with music and artists to entertain the spectators and give a boots to the Marathon runners. Thus, the competition becomes a big party the whole city is invited to, an event that draws more and more people each year, whether they are athletes that want to compete or spectators -almost a million- that crowd the streets to watch a Marathon course that goes through the city's landmarks and reaches the coveted goal at Buckingham Palace.
In 2008 the Marathon will be on April 13.
